Baked awe-inspiring in Lübeck

Sometimes, all it takes is stepping through a door, and the world outside suddenly slows down. That's exactly how I felt during my visit for the ZWISCHENZEILEN At Königstraße 15 lies Bäcktakulara small oasis in the heart of Lübeck's old town , where the air is filled with the aroma of freshly baked cakes, coffee, and genuine craftsmanship. What Monja and Lucas Rönneburg and their now 12-person team have created here is more than just a highly creative and professional bakery and a cozy café – it's a place to feel good.

From hobby to passion project

Monja originally trained as a dental technician, but baking has always been her great passion. What began as a hobby—making cakes for friends and family—quickly became more. More and more requests came in from outside this circle of friends and family. So Monja took the plunge and began training as a pastry chef and master pastry chef.

Bäcktakulär has been around since 2018. Monja opened her first small shop on Fleischhauerstraße as a bakery and production facility. Later, she moved to Wahmstraße, where the bakery remained until 2023. The team was never truly happy there – it was too small and cramped. When the opportunity arose to move to Königstraße, the decision was quickly made.

We fell in love with it immediately, especially because of the magnificent courtyard.

together with heart and mind

Monja's current husband, Lucas, has also been on board since 2020. While she mainly dedicates herself to the sweet art, he takes care of the business side – a perfect complement.

And speaking of weddings: The move to Königstraße was celebrated with a very special party. In the morning, Monja and Lucas exchanged vows in a civil ceremony, and in the evening, the grand opening was celebrated with around 100 friends and family members. It wasn't until the welcoming speech that the guests realized: This wasn't just the beginning of a new chapter for Bäcktaulär – but also the start of a life together.

Goosebumps moment!

room for everyone

The new premises on Königstraße are generously designed – with plenty of space between the tables, barrier-free access (also to the outdoor area), a small play area with a play kitchen for children dogs also very welcome.

We have room for everyone and are very happy to welcome everyone who comes to us.

You feel this openness as soon as you enter, and even more so when you talk to Monja, a truly warm and welcoming person. The light, the lovingly decorated display case, the relaxed atmosphere – it feels like a cozy living room. And the green backyard? A real hidden gem.

A special tip from my friends: the lemon curd tart – fresh, delicate, and simply perfect. The Oreo cheesecake is also a revelation and has probably saved more than one day.

dream cakes

Monja describes her baking as "creative cakes" —and that's a pretty accurate description. Perfectly smooth creams, modern designs, current trends—and a great deal of attention to detail. Fondant is used sparingly; instead, the creations are often playful, elegant, and creative all at once.

Some projects have stayed with her in particular: a 10.2-meter-long cake for a Lübeck company, 1,000 cupcakes for another, a 3D cake in the shape of an otter, or—no joke—wild boar cakes (yes, plural!) for hunters. Some clients have even become friends. Her best friend, by the way, was originally a client herself.

Courses, brunch and soon evening events as well.

baking classes since she started working as a pastry chef – usually during the winter wedding break. The classes are popular, often booked up quickly, and offer a wealth of knowledge and fun in a small, friendly group setting. Whether macarons, cakes, or cupcakes – Monja shows how it's done and her enthusiasm is contagious.

The homemade brunch , which takes place twice a month (except for the bread rolls, which are bought in), is also a real highlight. You can find the dates online. And evening events planned for the future – for example, a special event on the Wednesday before Ascension Day. Information about these will be available soon on Instagram , so be sure to check it out now.

My conclusion – come to Königstraße, it's worth it!

At Bäcktaulär , you can see the passion and dedication in every detail. It's this blend of artisanal perfection, creative passion, and genuine warmth that makes the place so special. So, next time you're strolling through Lübeck's old town, don't miss it. Because sometimes, it's exactly this kind of café that makes everyday life a little bit sweeter.

Lübeck and Kiel: a real love-hate relationship since the Hanseatic League era. I can't really relate. I was born and raised in Kiel, studied there, and love the city for all the wonderful memories it has given me. Then, after a few detours, I landed in Lübeck – and I love Lübeck too. At first, simply because the city is so beautiful. But now also – and I'm not superficial – because there are so many people here who fill beautiful Lübeck with so much heart. And I'll be writing about a few of them here.
