Ich habe kürzlich für die ZWISCHENZEILEN im The Newport bei Ralf Schulte vorbeigeschaut, um mit ihm über seinen wahrgewordenen Traum zu plaudern. In Ralf Schulte bin ich einer faszinierenden Persönlichkeit begegnet, deren Weg quer durch die halbe Welt beinahe zwangsläufig nach Lübeck führen musste.
Ralf originally hails from the Sauerland region, but spent his childhood and teenage holidays with his family on the Baltic Sea coast. It was there that he fell in love with the sea and the carefree spirit of summer. He learned to swim there and marveled at the massive ships like the Gedser II and the Peter Pan as they sailed into the port of Travemünde. A career that would have taken him out to sea would therefore have seemed like a natural fit. However, things turned out differently, as Ralf Schulte dedicated himself to the world of fashion and completed a tailoring apprenticeship at Jil Sander. Please don't say anything. It's pure coincidence that I've landed on this topic again today, when we're supposed to be talking about a restaurant. Anyway, let's get started, but you should know that Ralf Schulte's decades of experience working on almost every continent have shaped the atmosphere at The Newport and his relationships with his team and suppliers.
Der Weg führte Ralf direkt nach der Ausbildung für ein Jahr nach Singapur. Anschließend absolvierte er ein BWL-Studium. Er arbeitete neben dem Studium an den Wochenenden weiter für seinen damaligen Arbeitgeber und verantwortete bereits früh in seiner Karriere große Budgets. Für ein knappes Jahr zog es ihn nach dem Studium noch einmal in die alte Heimat – ins Sauerland – bevor der Wechsel zum OTTO Konzern und damit eine spannende Zeit des Aufbaus neuer Beschaffungsmärkte folgte. Türkei, Indien, Nepal, Rumänien, Brasilien, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka…. Die unzähligen Eindrücke und Erfahrungen aus diesen Jahren haben Ralf Schulte geprägt und seine Fähigkeit gestärkt, lösungsorientiert zu denken. Er ist ein Mann, für den die Welt niemals schwarz oder weiß war. 2003 machte er sich als Großhändler und Unternehmensberater selbständig und bezog ein Büro in den Media Docks in Lübeck.
From sailor to restaurateur
Ralf learned to sail as part of the company sports program at the OTTO Group. His first sailing trips took him on chartered boats on the beloved Baltic Sea. His first boat of his own was a Folkboat, with which he explored the sailing area in southern Denmark. Ralf tells me about the incomparable feeling of happiness he experienced spending the day at sea, sailing into a small harbor in the evening, and then relaxing in a restaurant, enjoying local fish and seafood.
After one of these trips, he stood with a pot of coffee in his hand at the window of his office in the Media Docks, overlooking the harbor sheds and the Trave River, and wondered why Lübeck didn't have a marina like the ones he had seen in many places in Denmark. What began as an idea took shape in Ralf Schulte's mind. He started planning a marina with an attached restaurant on the eastern bank of the Wall Peninsula, little knowing that it would take two and a half years to obtain the necessary permits. His patience and diplomatic skills, honed through negotiations with people from diverse cultures, now proved invaluable.
As a networker, he constantly sought dialogue with decision-makers to address their concerns. He tells me that one of the biggest problems had been finding a place to provide sanitary facilities for visiting sailors. The pontoon that was eventually built for this purpose incurred immense costs, which had never been anticipated. The pontoon was "the most expensive floating toilet in the entire Baltic Sea region."
The restaurant, located in a former blacksmith's shop, had changed hands several times. Ralf Schulte had it completely renovated, integrating historical details such as the steel beams of the ceiling structure and an old brick wall into the modern architecture. A new, light-filled glass extension was also built. The grand opening was finally celebrated in 2017.

Die 50 Liegeplätze des schicken Yachthafens sind heiß begehrt. Schiffe mit einer Länge bis zu 30 Metern finden hier ein Zuhause auf Zeit. Ralf Schulte hat als studierter Betriebswirt einfach Freude daran, Prozesse zu optimieren. Und er möchte es seinen Gästen möglichst leicht machen. So hat er in die Digitalisierung der Marina investiert. Vorab lässt sich auf der Plattform der Marina prüfen, ob ein Platz frei ist. Die lange Revierfahrt von der Ostsee über die Trave macht daher niemand vergebens. Die Liegeplatzreservierung und die Bezahlung der Gebühren werden online abgewickelt. Currently, the relevant city authorities are reviewing an expansion of the port by an additional 25 berths. This, too, is taking a little longer than hoped. But we already know that Ralf Schulte has staying power.

The Newport Restaurant
The restaurant's interior reflects refined taste and an eye for sustainable, high-quality materials. Ralf Schulte's love for the sea is palpable throughout. Lovingly chosen details adorn the rooms without distracting from the essentials: the water, the sailboats, the tower of St. Jakobi Church, and the historic harbor sheds. Restaurant guests sit on high-quality, German-made furniture at tables upholstered in linoleum, a renewable resource. All the lighting fixtures were custom-made for The Newport, and the curtains and cushions are crafted from imitation stingray skin. It's a harmonious overall concept that feels inviting without being pretentious or artificial. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to feel comfortable, whether arriving windblown from a boat, straight from the office, or elegantly dressed for a special occasion.
Die Speisen sind einfach allesamt unfassbar lecker. Was auch immer du bestellst: du wirst begeistert sein. Der Küchenchef und sein Team kreieren immer wieder neue Lieblingsspeisen. Dass gute Küche nur mit guten Ausgangsprodukten funktioniert, ist nichts Neues. Im The Newport schmeckst du die Frische und die Qualität der verwendeten Produkte. Mir gefällt sehr, dass ich hier mal rasch auf eine Currywurst vorbeikommen kann. Ebenso aber für ein mehrgängiges Menu. Zur nachhaltigen Ausrichtung des Hauses passt auch, dass keine Übersee-Weine ausgeschenkt werden. Das The Newport bezieht seine Weine über das Lübecker Weinhaus Von Melle.
The restaurant is open from 5 pm to 11 pm, Monday to Saturday. It's incredibly popular, so I recommend making a reservation in advance. You can book by phone, but of course, you can also book online. Digital solutions are Ralf Schulte's thing, after all. And absolutely state-of-the-art! In the summer, the pontoon is open from noon. It's simply fantastic for enjoying a drink with a breathtaking view and relaxing music!
