In Victorian England, flowers were not just pretty decorations, but tangible means of communication – WhatsApp messages in a bouquet of roses, so to speak. In a society in which restraint was the highest good and people preferred to put feelings between the lines, people turned to flower dictionaries. Anyone who received a floral gift eagerly leafed through it: Was the yellow rose a sign of friendship or a disguised “I like you, but that’s all there is to it”?
