In Lübeck kannst du im Herbst ein unglaublich spannendes Kunstprojekt von Christian Jankowski erleben, das bereits jetzt in der Overbeck-Gesellschaft in einer Videoinstallation vorgestellt wird. In diesem ersten Teil des Projekts kommst du mit dem Konzept in Berührung, indem du fünf Pastor:innen begleitest. Sie bewegen sich in den Videos durch jene Geschäfte und Lokalitäten, die ab 22. Oktober bis 5. November in ihren Kirchenräumen zu Gast sein werden.
Yes, you read that right:
Shops and a club will be receiving their customers in Kirchen for two weeks.
Hinter dem Projekt steht der in Berlin lebende Aktions- und Konzeptkünstler Christian Jankowski. Vergangenen Freitag wurde Teil I der Heiligen Geschäfte im Garten der Overbeck-Gesellschaft in Lübeck in Anwesenheit des Künstlers eröffnet. Christian Jankowski war in zahlreichen nationalen und internationalen Ausstellungen und Biennalen vertreten. Du kannst seine Werke in der Tate in London, im MOCA in Los Angeles und im Metropolitan Museum of Art anschauen. In einem seiner Interviews sagte er:
The common thread in my work is certainly to put people in an unfamiliar situation and then test their reactions.”

And Jankowski follows precisely this common thread in Lübeck as well. His Lübeck art project, "Holy Business," is inspired by the proximity of church, market, art, and everyday life in previous centuries.
For centuries, faith and the church were an integral part of almost everyone's life. Imagine that church services in the Middle Ages lasted incredibly long. Few people understood the liturgies, which were conducted in Latin until the Reformation. Pets roamed freely, the dead were buried, and people met acquaintances. The faithful came to listen to the organ, to pray before the altars, and to reverently admire murals depicting biblical stories and parables.

Wie ist das heute? Kirchen sind häufig lediglich Kulturdenkmale. Man bestaunt sie, macht Selfies, liest ein paar Absätze zur Baugeschichte. Aber ist das wirklich so? Womit identifizieren Menschen sich? Was bedeutet ihnen Religion? „Kunst ist meine Religion,“ ist Christian Jankowskis Antwort. Zu hören, wie die Antworten Anderer lauten, ist der Kern des Experiments. Jankowski sagt, er wolle für einen kurzen Zeitraum Menschen aus ihren Bubbles herausführen. „Macht Alle was Eigenes daraus und übt keine Zurückhaltung darüber zu reden.“
Holy Business Part I
For Part I of his project, Christian Jankowski invited four pastors and one female pastor to visit the shops and institutions that will be hosting them from October 22nd onwards. These visits were recorded in video sequences in which the church representatives sometimes move silently through the premises, but then also share their thoughts with the viewers, quote biblical texts, and make connections to their faith.
Pastor Bernd Schwarze bewegt sich beispielsweise durch das Möbelgeschäft bolia, setzt sich auf eine Couch, lässt sich auf ein Bett fallen. Pastorin Akkermann-Dorn geht gemessenen Schrittes an den Regalen eines Landwege-Bio-Supermarktes entlang und nimmt einige Produkte näher in Augenschein. Pastor Robert Pfeifer bewegt sich im Treibsand unter Stroboskop-Lichtern vor dem Logo des integrativen Superkunst Festivals. Pastor Jedeck setzt sich bei JessenLenz mit neuester Technologie auseinander.
Provocation by Christian Jankowski?
Perhaps. For me, however, this project is more of an inspiring approach to shed light on my own attitude towards church and faith and their place in my life.
At the opening, it was mentioned that not all churches in the old town were enthusiastic about the idea of bringing shops and services into their premises. A clothing store is slated to open in the Wichern Church. (It's not yet entirely certain whether this will happen.) In a parish newsletter, Pastor Gauer discusses the planned project, stating that it only appears as if two worlds are colliding. He explains that shopping is connected to issues such as human rights, environmental protection, and respect for human dignity—in other words, it's about both outward appearances and inner values.
The video installation in the brightly white rooms of the Overbeck Society offers ample space to absorb what is said and seen. And to discuss it, if the opportunity arises. I, for one, spontaneously struck up a conversation with two women I didn't know at all about the video content and the concept of "sacrilege."
