Wakenitz view in the home port

Why a restaurant recommendation for a day trip right now? It's already the time of summer threads! That's what they called the white spiderwebs in the 18th century that float through the air and settle on bushes and grasses. Summer threads—it just sounds wonderful to me. After all, every day is perfect for a day trip. So today, the Lübeck ZWISCHENZEILEN to their home port . Gabi Sommer and Olaf Hensel created this home port for themselves, and especially for us, at the clubhouse of the Wakenitz Sailing Club in Eichholz.

New favorite spot by the water

Gabi and Olaf took over as the new tenants of the SVW restaurant right in the middle of the second lockdown. With a great deal of courage, full commitment, and the helping hands of friends and club members, they successfully renovated the premises at Schäferstraße 16 in the spring of 2021. Word quickly spread, not only among active sailors, that a new favorite spot had been created, one well worth the trip. The location on the banks of the Wakenitz River is truly unique, and Gabi and Olaf have decorated the space accordingly, incorporating many small maritime touches.

Regional delights

The small but excellent menu offers something for everyone. Familiar North German dishes like Sauerfleisch (pickled meat), Panfisch (pan-fried fish), and roast beef are especially popular. There's also a fine selection of salads, pasta, and currywurst. Fish and meat specialties are also available. The ingredients are sourced from local farms.

Everyone should feel welcome at Heimathafen. Guests come who have booked in advance, but also spontaneous visitors who stop for a break during their bike tour or walk along the Wakenitz River. No frills, just honest, honest food. This concept appeals to many locals who like to celebrate family occasions here. So it's worth checking the website beforehand to see if the restaurant is booked for a private event on the day you'd like to eat.

Chilling outside

Gabi and Olaf are easygoing people. You can feel it immediately in the relaxed atmosphere. The lawn in front of the restaurant is a green oasis. In the summer, you can grab a delicious drink or an ice cream directly from the Heimathafen trailer. Plenty of deck chairs and a few beach chairs invite you to linger. You can turn your seat to your liking and soak up the sun. In the distance, the twin spires of Lübeck Cathedral beckon. All kinds of watercraft glide by on the Wakenitz River.

The excursion boat waves. The group in the canoe is cheered on from the shore. The Wakenitz River, still and deep blue, glitters between all these boats. The smell of fried potatoes mingles with the fresh air – and small waves gently lap against the jetty. Here comes a family of swans, over there on the opposite bank someone is going for a swim. Wonderful, isn't it?

Perhaps now is the perfect moment to discover this place for yourself – before autumn, with its misty wisps, washes away the last golden days of summer from the Wakenitz River. And who knows: maybe this will become your new favorite spot by the water. As long as the threads of summer dance, there's still time for carefree moments here.

Do you ever get that feeling? You walk past an inscription, a sculpture, or a plaque and you just have to stop and find out what it's all about? That's how it is for me. ALWAYS! "One only sees what one already knows and understands." I couldn't agree more with Goethe on that point. That's precisely why I never want to stop discovering the seemingly insignificant, recognizing connections, learning new things, and getting to the bottom of people and their stories. Okay, and writing overly long sentences... And learning new languages, of course...

Don't miss a thing.
