Since 1999, a small devil on the southern facade of St. Mary's Church . Unlike other depictions of the devil, the statue by Lübeck artist Rolf Goerler is rather cute and not at all frightening. This is for good reason, as the statue commemorates a Lübeck legend , which goes as follows:
After a great city fire in the 13th century, large parts of the city had to be rebuilt, including St. Mary's Church. To rebuild the church as quickly as possible, the builders asked the devil for help. However, they tricked him into thinking it was a new tavern, not a church. The devil agreed to help and hauled large stones. But when he saw the large, light-filled windows, he realized he'd been tricked and grabbed a large granite block to destroy the church walls again. At the last moment, a journeyman craftsman managed to appease him with the promise of building a tavern nearby. The devil dropped the granite block, which still lies beside St. Mary's Church today. Sitting on it is the devil himself, who still smiles happily, since the Ratskeller, the promised tavern near St. Mary's Church, was built almost exclusively for him.
