The Geibel Monument

Franz Emanuel August Geibel, born in Lübeck in 1815, is depicted enthroned near the Holy Spirit Hospital, deep in thought. This monument to Lübeck's honorary citizen and city poet was erected in 1889, just five years after his death. At that time, however, it was not located on Königstraße, but was part of Geibelplatz, which we know today as Koberg. The statue had to be removed in 1936 during a redesign of the square, which was then renamed "Koberg."

There is no longer a Geibelplatz or a Geibel-Straße that was originally planned, but the comprehensive school of the same name on Lübeck's old town island, along with its stone likeness, commemorates the poet who was extremely popular during his lifetime.

Do you ever get that feeling? You walk past an inscription, a sculpture, or a plaque and you just have to stop and find out what it's all about? That's how it is for me. ALWAYS! "One only sees what one already knows and understands." I couldn't agree more with Goethe on that point. That's precisely why I never want to stop discovering the seemingly insignificant, recognizing connections, learning new things, and getting to the bottom of people and their stories. Okay, and writing overly long sentences... And learning new languages, of course...
