Memorial to the arson attack on Hafenstraße

The memorial on Hafenstraße, on the former factory grounds of H. & J. Brüggen, commemorates a crime from the recent history of the Hanseatic city. Until 1996, a asylum center , providing shelter to 48 refugees from African countries. On the night of January 18, 1996, an arson attack carried out on the accommodation. Ten people – including seven children – lost their lives, and another 38 people were injured, some seriously.

This crime has not been solved to this day, but the memorial stone still serves as a reminder of the cowardly act and sets a sign against xenophobia .

Do you ever get that feeling? You walk past an inscription, a sculpture, or a plaque and you just have to stop and find out what it's all about? That's how it is for me. ALWAYS! "One only sees what one already knows and understands." I couldn't agree more with Goethe on that point. That's precisely why I never want to stop discovering the seemingly insignificant, recognizing connections, learning new things, and getting to the bottom of people and their stories. Okay, and writing overly long sentences... And learning new languages, of course...
