The memorial on Hafenstraße, on the former factory grounds of H. & J. Brüggen, commemorates a crime from the recent history of the Hanseatic city. Until 1996, a asylum center , providing shelter to 48 refugees from African countries. On the night of January 18, 1996, an arson attack carried out on the accommodation. Ten people – including seven children – lost their lives, and another 38 people were injured, some seriously.
This crime has not been solved to this day, but the memorial stone still serves as a reminder of the cowardly act and sets a sign against xenophobia .
