Humorous Hell

Like the Lawyers' Relief, "Hell " was created by the Lübeck sculptor Otto Mantzel. The three suffering, praying figures, along with the two devil-like figures, refer to a humorous context: Purgatory Street leads to Cathedral Churchyard and Paradise Streets. The relief is located on Purgatory and commemorates a courtyard colloquially known as "Hell," enclosed by numbers 15 to 23. This nickname likely originated from the man who paved the courtyard, who was supposedly nicknamed "Devil."

To this day, the terracotta relief from 1936 serves as a reminder of this prank by the citizens.
