The cat pulling relief

The relief was made in 1930 by the sculptor Otto Mantel. The original is kept at the St. Annen Museum. By the way, the term “impost” means the stone protruding from the wall, which supports the arch.

Here you can see the so called cat pulling relief. Two merchants can be seen trying to pull the other with their neck strength over an open flame with an iron rod in their mouths as a biting stick. And that was the end Cat pulling was a popular folk sport, a precursor to tug-of-war and an amusement like finger-wagging.
